Job Description:

The Regulatory Specialist we are seeking must have a strong understanding of environmental consulting, natural resource study designs, managing projects, and business development. Experience carrying out AEPA and AUC document review and processes for Alberta renewable projects is mandatory. The ideal candidate will also have experience complying with other federal laws and regulations, along with Alberta environmental permitting and review. Although this position will focus on AEPA and AUC, opportunities to support other WEST services will also be available based on the candidate’s background and areas of interest.  


Primary duties may include:

  • Design and implement scientific consulting solutions for clients. 
  • Write reports, applying scientific expertise to present and interpret the results of field and desktop studies in their scientific and regulatory context. 
  • Communicate with clients regarding their needs. 
  • Conduct day to day administration of projects.
  • Work with field staff in the execution of field studies and field coordination.
  • Prepare proposals for project work. 
  • Provide quality assurance of data.
  • Assist with hearing preparation and act as an expert witness. 
  • Market WEST’s capabilities. 
  • Foster current business relationships and promote new business development efforts.
  • Help maintain WEST’s position as thought leaders in the environmental consulting market. 
  • Provide strategic input and support to WEST in growing and expanding our work for the renewable industry.

Job Requirements:

  • Legally allowed to work in Canada (i.e., Canadian citizen, Canadian permanent resident, or have an existing VISA with no work restrictions) Please note: US citizens require a Canadian work visa to work in Canada
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, planning, or natural resource science, with a master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 7 years in environmental consulting and project management or equivalent.  
  • Demonstrated experience in business development and consulting work, professional scientific experience, and a track record of maintaining positive relationships with coworkers, clients, stakeholders, or sub-consultants. 
  •  Understanding of the renewable energy market, preferably in Alberta. 
  •  Natural science technical knowledge. 
  •  Demonstrated ability to work on biological field studies.
  •  Strong, competent writing skills with the ability to pay close attention to detail and accurately report the scientific methods and results of field studies. 
  •  Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral. 
  •  Good time management, project management and organizational skills with the ability to work well under time constraints and meet deliverable targets and deadlines. 
  •  Ability to follow instructions from managers and accept guidance and constructive criticism. 
  • Experience with statistical analysis, beneficial, but not mandatory 

 

Successful candidates must be able to provide a driver’s abstract that meets WEST’s minimum criteria to operate a motor vehicle on behalf of the company.  Successful candidates must also be able to pass a drug and alcohol test that meets the minimum criteria of WEST and our clients. Candidates must be capable of adhering to all health and safety requirements outlined by WEST and our clients, for the duration of their employment.
