Intermediate Biologist – Permanent, Full-Time, Edmonton, Alberta

Spencer Environmental Management Services Ltd. has been providing environmental and biophysical impact assessments, environmental planning, conservation planning, wetland-related services, and environmental permit acquisition services in support of capital project design, construction and operation for over 40 years. Spencer currently has an opening for a highly motivated, versatile biologist/ecologist with strong wildlife skills to join our team.

Job Details:

  • permanent, full-time (typically 40 hrs/wk with flexibility to respond to dynamic project needs);
  • based in Edmonton (required); some opportunity to WFH
  • occasional, short-term travel to project sites throughout Alberta required
  • start date to be negotiated with successful candidate
  • compensation to be commensurate with candidate’s experience and skills

Job duties and opportunities for growth include:

  • undertake field assessments
  • manage and analyze biophysical data, prepare technical reports and contribute to environmental/biophysical assessments
  • assist with environmental permit acquisition
  • assist with project management and client liaison

Qualifications:

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in ecology, conservation biology, botany or related discipline, with at least 5 years of professional experience; equivalencies will be considered
  • at least 5 years of consulting experience is preferred
  • eligible to work in Canada (i.e., Canadian citizen, Canadian permanent resident)
  • P.Biol. accreditation or eligibility to register as a P.Biol. in Alberta; B.I.T. may be considered
  • eligible to hold a valid Class 5 driver’s license, with no restrictions
  • knowledgeable about Alberta landscapes and ecological regions
  • experience working independently in field settings
  • strong desire to contribute to science-based environmental management and successful project delivery as an integrated team member

Demonstrated skills/areas of excellence:

  • plan and conduct field surveys for one or more of the following: vegetation, wildlife, wetlands
  • acquisition of federal and provincial environmental permits
  • preparation of environmental impact assessments
  • technical report preparation
  • strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to interact effectively with others, including scientists, regulators, engineers, construction personnel
  • critical thinking, problem-solving, effective time management, responding to dynamic work conditions and hours
  • wildlife assessment, monitoring, and reporting
